They can be far more capable than most people expect. Today's flush wood inserts are excellent heaters, pairing a sealed, high-efficiency firebox with a convection chamber that delivers warm air efficiently throughout your home. The key is sizing — how much of the house an insert heats depends on the model's capacity and your floor plan, so match the insert to the square footage you want to cover.
Start with what your home already has. A fireplace insert must be installed into a code-conforming masonry fireplace or a listed, factory-built wood fireplace — it can't be framed into a wall on its own. If you have an existing fireplace, an insert goes inside it; if you don't, a freestanding stove is how you add that same kind of wood heat to a room.
No. A gas insert is a complete, efficient home heating appliance that is sealed and vented through your chimney. Gas logs are used for decorative purposes and are not designed to heat your home.
Plan on weekly attention during the burning season. The burn platform and ash should be removed a minimum of once a week, or as needed for consistent operation, depending on pellet quality and how much you burn. Your owner's manual lays out the full maintenance schedule.

Gas inserts are sealed, direct-vent heating appliances that use outside air for combustion, so they vent through liners run inside your existing chimney — one liner carries exhaust out while the other supplies combustion air. That dual-liner setup is what ensures proper draft and maintains your indoor air quality.
Not for it to heat. Gas fireplace inserts are designed to provide optimal convective heat with or without the standard fan — the fan simply moves warmth into the room faster, and you can adjust it from your chair with a remote. If you are sensitive to noise, enjoy the fire with the fan off and switch it on when you want quicker heat.
Usually because the chimney draft is not established yet. On wood inserts, opening the bypass damper before lighting or reloading gives smoke a larger path up the chimney, and models with a push-button igniter can preheat the venting to start the draft. If smoke continues with the bypass open, have your flue checked — it may need cleaning, or your home may have negative pressure.
Test it with a moisture meter — guessing does not work. Wet wood creates excessive smoke and moisture in the firebox, while dry wood gives a hotter, more efficient burn. Split a piece and test the fresh face; every Lopi and Fireplace Xtrordinair wood model even includes a free moisture meter for exactly this check.
Have your chimney inspected at least twice a year and cleaned as necessary, and have the appliance itself serviced once a year by a professional, factory-trained dealer. Summer is a great time for both, so everything is ready before burning season.
